3/16/2007: The Coupe was purchased today in Oklahoma City and driven 190 miles back home to Mansfield, TX. Hugh III and his best friend Chris chased me home in the Toyota Yaris just in case I ran into trouble. Hugh and Chris pulled up beside me on the interstate at 70mph with silly grins on their faces; I punched it and they ate my dust! I later learned that they dropped the Yaris into 3rd gear to try to give me a run, but it was a futile effort on their part. The coupe cruised comfortably at 70-80mph, ran 180 degree water temps, burned 10 or so gallons of gas, and otherwise traveled quite well. Steering wanders a little at highway speeds, but other than that, it was a fantastic and uneventful trip. As soon as I got her home (dusk) I gave a bunch of rides (of course, Bobbie was the very first passenger), installed chrome moons over the wheel centers (courtesy of the previous owner) and removed the silly little chrome pipes sticking out of the sides at the bottom of the front cowl (right above the moon eyes stickers in the photos below. Engine (302), tranny (C4) and rearend (8") are bone stock out of a '69 mustang. Steering is rack and pinion. The engine is not the flathead I had planned for, but it's unique in that it doesn't run a run-of-the-mill Chevy 350. When I first saw the pictures of the coupe below, I though a roof chop would be in order. After getting behind the wheel for 3 hours, I realized that this would be unpractical as I am already looking through the very top of the windshield. Any chop and I'd be looking at the inside front edge of the roof. I have a feeling that I'm going to sell my flathead V8 project, anybody interested? It spins freely and there is no rust on my '49 8BA Ford V8. Up next, Carburator/Manifold Upgrade |
