1931
Ford Model A

The '31 needed a subtle makeover. I removed the silly
chrome strips that were glued to the drip rails, stuck on the hood welting and
on the bottom of the rear of the car. The little coupe now has a new
meaner look. I like it. I took it to a carshow last weekend and my
car club president (who has seen my car half a dozen times) asked me when I
added the pinstripes. I think removing the chrome strips was a step in the
right direction - they were distracting from the cool hand painted pin stripes
that have always been on the car. I still wasn't satisfied. It was
time for some paint. My long time CAF buddy and personal friend, Harlan
Short and I tackled a minor paint job today. What do you think?

In true hotrodder fashion, Harlan (pictured above) and I put our heads together
and came up with a crafty way to design a Maltese Cross stencil.
We taped some poster board together to form the correct size square shape, then
took it to my back porch and flipped my round outdoor iron
table over and set it on top of the poster board to use as a perfect jig to
trace the circular curves for the cross shape.

Here is the finished product. $4 worth of poster board and a $2 can of
flat white rattle can paint. I imagine this job would have been
done similarly by hotrodders from years past. I think it turned out pretty
good, and that's what counts in the end.

The pin striping does stand out better now without the chrome stuff stuck all
over the body.

I think the little coupe will show well this weekend at the Good Guys show at
the Texas Motor Speedway. I can't wait, because
all participants (2,500 hotrods & muscle cars expected) get the opportunity to
drive a few laps on the track.
